Returning: An Earth Art Installation

The Labyrinth

One hundred eighty “retired” apple trees encircled the labyrinth, cradling the ancient pathway within. The labyrinth is a meditative tool that has been used for thousands of years in various cultures around the world. It is a sacred place of reflection and contemplation; conscious walking and breathing relaxes the body, clears the mind, and soothes the spirit.

The Circlets

Six structures surrounded the larger circle and were intended as private cells, a place where one might retreat for private reflection. A journal was placed in each one to encourage visitors to share their impression. Like the labyrinth, these small spaces were designed as meditative sacred places. Visitors were invited to collaborate in the construction of one circlet by adding branches from a pile of wood nearby.

Freestanding Sculptures

These sculptures were created from the larger pieces of cut wood that were used to make the circlets. They were not fixed or secured in any way and were rearranged by weather and visitors who were invited to interact with the artwork.

The Burning

The Labyrinth and Circlets were burned in a closing ceremony, returning them to the Earth from which they came.

Special Thanks & Acknowledgement

This work would not have been possible without the help and contributions of Clair Kauffman: orchard manager, master skid loader driver and tree manipulator, labyrinth creator, and latent artist. Thanks also to Kauffman Orchards who allowed me to realize my vision and feed my artistic soul through this meaningful work.
